The Others

I braved myself to watch it all over again.

I'm gonna make this quick because Mum dragged me out to the market this morning.

The Others
Sooner or later, they'll find you.

Spoilers.

At first, I thought the beginning of the movie was a total waste of time. Grace, played by Nicole Kidman, starts screaming and crying, and you would think she came out of a bad dream. Then, it quickly moves on to the arrival of these three maids & butler who, in her thought, were notified of an opening of a maid/gardener position at her enormous home.

So the movie moves on from there. Grace has two children, Ann and Nicholas. Ann keeps hinting of a presenc of a boy named Victor, of whom Grace thinks is a ghost or a hallucination or some form of fantasy to scare her brother, since both of them live in utter darkness (due to an illness in which exposition to light may kill them). Ann starts drawing pictures of four people, parents, the boy Victor and an old woman with godly scary eyes, since its all white.

In the movie, Grace is strict, and follows the Bible closely but towards the end, the elderly maid, Bertha starts telling her not alal answers are found in the bible. Grace starts hearing other people herself, like the loud steps above her knitting room and with the stupid door closing behind her when she was looking in the mirror, which I COULD NOT remove out of my head.
And the piano room (which is forbidden to any soul ) which starts making sounds and the door shuts right in front of her face while she carries a shotgun everywhere she goes.

I'm not too sure when was this particular scene, but its one of the key motives in the movie.
There's this "Book of the Dead". You see in Mean Girls, you have the oh-so-pinkish Burn Book, in horror movies, its the book of the dead. The elderly maid (not mistaken, Bertha) tells Grace that these were the people who died in the exact position in the house. Some were sitting, and ohkay, that one scared me half to death. Book of the Dead? Yikes.

Anyhoo, one of the pictures were missing, and there were pictures of her son and daughter (which she was unaware of). The missing picture was the obvious.

So with all these, she goes into the fog to find the local priest to bless the house. Out of nowhere, her husband (pressumed dead in the World War) appears and returns home. Ann makes accusations to her father about 'the night when she went mad' and how she attacked her minutes before that. He spends a night with Grace, and disappears.

The children wake up to find all the curtains missing, and Grace thinks it was the maid who was trying to suck her in all the crazy allegations of 'other people' living in the house, which was originally made by Ann. The maids leave, Ann and Nicholas make the run, to find the graves of the maids, while Grace finds the missing picture : the maids.
Then it goes on with Bertha telling her that they will live in harmony, even if they were dead.

Ann and Nicholas were in a room, and starts seeing the old woman whom Ann draws in her pictures. Grace finds out that her children and her own self were not the living ones, but the dead. The living were in seance (somesort of calling of the dead) and Grace starts attacking them spiritually. Having to have seen all the chaos, Victor's mum insists that they leave the haunted house.

Grace, with her children, recalls the 'night where she went mad'. She missed her husband too much and became frustrated with her children, and suffocated them with a pillow before taking the shotgun to her forehead. And how she could wake up and thought that God gave her another chance (which brings to the beginning) .Bertha tells them they could get along, even if they were dead cause they don't see the living sometimes.
They inhabit the same house, while the living leaves the house.

Truthfully, this movie scared the crap out of me, after Skeleton Key. I'm easily wiped off from such movies and this is byfar a very intuitive horror flick . I think its absolutely good, other than all the same old Korean horror which involves long-haird girls of half chopped heads.
Nicole Kidman was superb.

Anyhoo, go check this movie out or if you want to, you can borrow the CD from me.

Kit Weng! Quan Yuan! I dare you to watch. Shall we? (:
